ABOUT SERPENTINA

AIM Set up on the 18th of March 2009, Serpentina is a non profit organization that aims at making the Internet and other Commmunication and Information Technologies part of the everyday life, promoting technology across subjects and within its environment. We believe these are perfectly great tools and excellent aids to creativity, interaction, collaboration and social integration. They will form the basis for all our playing, educational and cultural activities to everyone regardless of age. In 2010, in partnership with the town hall of Celorico da Beira – a rural town in Portugal, Serpentina has opened a University for Seniors, called Global Village, which has now more than 30 students and 14 teachers.

MUSEUS&LIBRARIES: DIGITAL TOOLS FOR EDUCATIONAL SERVICES  [Workshop]
Serpentina will hold the workshop Museums & Libraries: digital tools for educational services at COWORKLISBOA in Lx factory.
This workshop aims to explore a set of digital tools, in collaboration, that have great potential in the support of educational activities in libraries and museums. The workshop will be hands-on and experimental, promoting the sharing of experiences between participants.

SERPENTINA CARRIES OUT A WORKSHOP IN THE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY OF ALMEIDA
Serpentina carried out the workshop Code Book at the Municipal Library of Almeida, Guarda.
There were 45 children from 6 to 14 years old and it was a very fun afternoon with lots of books and QR codes.

SERPENTINA GOES TO A WORKSHOP IN MALTA
Serpentina’s coordinator, Ana Pires, will be in Malta from February 10 to 17 to attend the workshop Empowerment in ICT Skills: Making Use of Media and Communication Technology Tools, at the Executive Training Institute.
This participation has the financial aid of the Sectarian Program Grudvig from Life-Long Learning Program.

GEOCACHING AND QR CODES AT CARCAVELOS GRINDING
Serpentina, in partnership with the Communitarian Center of Carcavelos, will hold the workshop HANDS ON: LET’S BRING TO LIFE CARCAVELOS GRINDING! Geocaching and QR Codes workshop about this building, demolished in 2001, though facing some controversy.
This activity, addressed to the IT students from the Community Center, is hold within the European project MEDIASCAPES, a learning partnership with the financial aid of PROALV program.

MEDIASCAPES PROJECTS MEET IN LISBON
Within the European project MEDIASCAPES, the partners of this project met in Lisbon from January 31 to February 2. Several workshops and a guided tour to Lisbon’s Graffiti were held, under the theme of creativity.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the Municipal Library of Camões and COWORKLISBOA, for providing their spaces.

CAL30 AND SERPENTINA LAUNCH ARCHITECTURE  FOR EVERYONE WORKSHOPS 
ARCHITECTURE FOR EVERYONE is a project that aims to make architecture accessible for everyone through workshops that combine hands-on activities with amusement, by reflecting on architecture, urbanism and associated technologies.

The project starts December 18 with the workshop  “Fly over Lisbon,”  addressed to the senior population. Guided by Google Maps and other tools, the architecture and history of Lisbon’s neighborhoods will be explored, hoping next time people glance at those places differently. This activity is free, with the financial aid of PROALV, and COWORKLISBOA providing the space.

Other workshops will follow, such as “Let’s build a city?” addressed to children who, with diverse materials and tons of imagination, will build a piece of the city, exploring basic concepts of its organization.

The central goals of the program are to raise attention about the importance of daily architecture, with special focus on life in the cities, environment and patrimony, and to stimulate the participation of everyone in the collective construction of a better and more sustainable environment.

This initiative is promoted by the collective of architects at CAL30 with the collaboration of Serpentina in the design and implementation of some of its activities.

MEDIASCAPES: FROM VERONA WITH LOVE
 As a part of the European project MEDIASCAPES, Serpentina was in Verona October 17 to 21 to attend the 4th meeting of the project. In the land of Romeo and Juliet, the highlighted subject was, of course, love.

Biblio[TIC]A: A NEW PROGRAM FOR LIBRARIES
 Biblio[TIC]a project is a joint initiative from Serpentina and the projects Ler por aí and fos Olho espero, olhar desperto, with the goal of carrying out activities which promote books and reading, through the integration of Internet, web technologies and photography. The project also seeks to fight digital and visual illiteracies, promoting social inclusion and life-long learning. For more information, please contact us.

Serpentina was in Macau in the first half of October to evaluate the possibility of extending its activities to this territory. We bring back our bag full of ideas.

OPENING OF THE 3RD SCHOOL YEAR OF THE SENIOR UNIVERSITY OF CELORICO
Next October 1 at 2 pm, in Celorico’s Cultural Center, we celebrate the opening of the 3rd school year of the Senior University of Celorico da Beira.

We were in Bucharest, Romania, July 4 to 7, to attend the 3rd meeting of MEDIASCAPES, a learning partnership  by the Sectarian Programme Grudvig from PROALV, with ours colleagues from Italy, Germany and Romania. Throughout these days different activities took place, which explored the relations between space, people and media.

WE WERE FEATURED ON THE GERMAN PRESS
We went to Suhl, in Germany, located 200 km from Frankfurt, from March 28 to April 1, to attend the 2nd meeting of the European project MEDIASCAPES. There were presentations, a guided tour to the city and exercises, all part of the learning partnership of the Sectarian Programme Grudvig from Life-Long Learning Programme: exploring the relations between space, people and media. The local paper did a story about our project and this is the photograph used to illustrate it.

As a part of the INVESTIGATION PROJECT UP – CMP / Oporto city Museums: Challenges in the Construction of Territories, and thanks to the invitation of Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, Serpentina hosted the workshop “Museums: collaborative project and social technologies” October 3 at FEUP, addressed to museum professionals.

MEDIASCAPES project starts in Lisbon
The 1st meeting of the MEDIASCAPES project, a learning partnership financed by the Sectarian Programme Grudvig from PROALV, was held in Lisbon September 5 to 7. With our partners from Germany, Italy and Romania we designed the activities plan to be developed throughout the next two years and we put into practice some exercises at the beautiful garden of Quinta da Alagoa, in Carcavelos, and at the Vitamimos facilities, which are located there.

Workshops Kids 2.0 at the Municipal Library of Guarda
In partnership with the Municipal Library Eduardo Lourenço (Guarda), Serpentina hosts the workshop “Your land in podcast”, September 2, addressed to children from 8 to 10.

Serpentina integrates the European project MEDIASCAPES
Following the approval of the financing of the learning partnership MEDIASCAPES by the Sectarian Programme Grudvig from Life-Long Learning Programme, Serpentina, in partnership with institutions from Romania, Italy and Germany, will develop in the next two years a set of activities that wish to address questions related to convergence and divergence between “classical” and “digital” cultural forms, exploring the relations between space, people and media, aiming to map digital literacy practices developed in familiar environments, and examine interaction forms with the media in diverse urban public spaces.

In partnership with Cascais City Hall – São Domingos de Rana Library, Serpentina will host three workshops on Easter holidays, which intend to promote the use of “Web” tools (podcast, QR codes, Voicethread, among others) in an interactive, interdisciplinary and integrated way. Serpentina opens a training space in the Coliseum street, Lisbon
It has room for all of us, but only 8 at a time (ok, it’s a tiny room…). It’s located in Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, 117 – 4th floor, Room B, next to Politeama theater, in front of Ateneu, 50 meters away from Coliseum. The metro station is Restauradores and all you need is to turn to Hard Rock Café street and it’s right on the corner. We are waiting for you with arms wide open!

It’s all set to the opening of the Global Village, Celorico da Beira’s Senior University, Guarda district, October 6. This is an initiative from Serpentina with the support of Celorico da Beira’s town hall.

Serpentina launches e-learning workshops with Delta Consultores
 In collaboration with Delta Consultores, Serpentina launches a set of workshops in e-learning. The first one, “Hands on – a blog for my business”, is already October 20 at 6 pm, with duration of two hours. The session is synchronous. Don’t leave us there alone ;)

Workshop ‘Culture On-line’ at Santarém’s Town Hall
 In collaboration with Santarém’s town hall, and integrated in the Celebrations of the European Days of Patrimony 2010, Serpentina will carry out the 4th edition of the workshop “Cultural organizations On-line: Tendencies, Practices and Tools” at Sala de Leitura Bernardo Santareno, in Santarém, September 24, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm. Serpentina launched a new service, NET at Home, that goes to your house to help you navigate, share information and communicate using the Internet. Workshops Kids 2.0 at São Domingos de Rana Library
Under the motto: “Let’s link the worlds”, Serpentina is organizing a set of educational and recreational workshops addressed to primary school children, which intend to promote the use of tools ‘Web 2.0’ in an interactive, cross-disciplinary and integrated way – linking the ‘virtual’ world to the ‘real’ world. The project is called Kids 2.0.
The workshops will take place at the schools EB1 Nº101 – Alvalade and EB1 José Canas and July 28 and 29 will be hold at São Domingos de Rana Library. To register you just have to contact the Library.

Serpentina was invited by the Municipal Library of Oeiras to organize the workshop Tools 2.0 for Ideas 2.0, included in the program of the V Encontro Oeiras a Ler, which took place May 21 e 22 in this library.

VitaTek takes the NET to the garden
Vitamimos and Serpentina celebrated a partnership today with the aim of creating a set of educational and recreational activities that promote both the use of the Internet and the adoption of healthy lifestyles.
The project is called VitaTek and contemplates initiatives addressed to all ages.
‘Net in the garden’ and ‘Podcast at the market’ are examples of some of the activities you can expect from this creative duo ;)

Serpentina integrates the European project Mediascapes [2011-2013]

Following the financial approval of the learning partnership MEDIASCAPES, by the Sectarian Programme Grudvig from Life-Long Learning Programme, Serpentina, in partnership with institutions from Romania, Italy and Germany, will develop, during the next two years, a set of activities that aim to approach issues related to convergence and divergence between “classical” and “digital” cultural forms, exploring the relations between space, people and media, whose goal is the mapping of digital alphabetization practices developed in a familiar environment, and the examination of interactive ways with the media in diverse urban public spaces.
